President-Elect NomineesPeter Andras (CV)The INNS is the leading scientific society in the use of neural networks and learning machines to revolutionize technology and science. This revolution has a huge impact in all areas of human life and the scientific understanding of nature. I believe that the INNS has a mission to internationally lead the research in neurally inspired machine learning, computational analysis and modelling of neural and cognitive systems, and technological applications of these. I aim to strengthen the INNS as a world-leading organisation, especially in areas where key future innovations will emerge, moving the understanding and application of neural networks to the next level (e.g. understanding and modelling neuromodulation). I aim to expand the activity of the INNS in supporting mobility of PhD students across the world. I aim to contribute to the strengthening of industrial links and collaborations of the INNS, which is key to the success of scientific societies in technological areas. Zeng-Guang Hou (CV)Neural networks are the main driving force behind AI’s fast advancement in not only academia but also industries. We should attract more students and young members, and those from industries. Also, biological and brain research has been contributing to the neural network community from the very beginning. We need to have more people from fundamental research, like neuroscientists and mathematicians. I have been a member of INNS for 19 years and serving this great community as a BOG member and an organizer of INNS conferences and activities. If elected, I will promote INNS and increase its impact by organizing more activities and technical events, and by attracting more members, particularly student and young members. I would also attract more participants from intelligence industries. I believe that INNS will be a society bridging the gap between fundamental research and technological applications. Francesco Carlo Morabito (CV)INNS is a premier organization in the field of Neuroscience, Neural Networks and Artificial Intelligence. I was honored to work for a long time with the pioneers of our research field who founded INNS. Trying to develop a general framework to constantly relate the conceptual equations and the brain model. Neural Networks represent a well-grounded paradigm rooted in many disciplines, including computer science, physics, psychology, information science, and engineering. However, we need to be successful in involving the new generation of researchers to contaminate our ideas with novel perspectives. For example, to consider ethical impact, art and humanity, and legal aspects of our powerful technology. The activities started under the current President should be continued. Some of the directions are: more involvement in the Doctorate Schools, in the design of advanced Courses, in educational activities, in the development of public relations and commitment to reducing the gender gap in our fields.
Governor-at-Large NomineesAnne Canuto (CV)In renewing my membership as Board of Governors of INNS, I intend to support even further the INNS future growth as a truly inclusive, international and interdisciplinary society. In order to do this, I intend to encourage a stronger involvement of more local, national and international researchers as well as undergraduate and graduate students, with this society. One of my main actions is to link INNS with our local society in order to promote INNS in Brazil and South America. Finally, I will work unrelentingly to further strengthen the reputation of the Neural Networks field as well as its main event, International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN). Kenji Doya (CV)Since my first international conference presentation at ICNN 1988 in San Diego, INNS has been my base for exchanging ideas about how the brain works. I have been engaged in building a new graduate university Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, organizing Okinawa Computational Neuroscience Course, and running my own lab that combines rodent experiments, computational modeling, and robotics. We have shown reward predictive coding in the basal ganglia, regulation of patience by serotonin, and the neural circuits for action planning and dynamic Bayesian inference. From 2008 to 2021, I served as a Co-Editor-in-Chief of Neural Networks representing the Japanese Neural Network Society (JNNS). Together with my INNS counterpart DeLiang Wang, we succeeded in expanding its impact in the age of deep learning. From 2023 to 2024, I am serving as the President of JNNS. As a member of INNS BOG, I would strive for exchanges beyond regional/disciplinary borders and training young researchers. I will participate in activities devoted to attracting and retaining members and identifying potential candidates for leadership positions. I would dedicate particular attention to education activities, such as mentoring programs, research seminars for PhD students, strengthening the support for young researchers, with special focus on female researchers. Fostering the interactions between INNS and the industry will be also a priority of my commitments if I become a member of the INNS Board of Governors. Alexander Gorban (CV)My vision is that INNS's core mission is to bridge gaps and break down barriers between Neural Networks and many other areas of research and technology, between R&D in different countries, as well as between education and R&D activities in the field of AI and Neural Networks. If elected, I will focus in these directions: 1. Promotion of INNS activities in organizing conferences, seminars, and trainings, especially for young scientists. 2. Following my research experience, I would like to organize special projects to create reliable neural networks and develop metrology of neural AI in close contact with industry. These issues will soon get even more attention because potential AI errors will bother users more and more. To this end, I organize seminars, special sessions, schools and special issues on these and related topics. 3. I propose to use my position as a Board member to promote international cooperation, joint events and various exchange programs across national borders. Sebastien Helie (CV)If I get elected to the BoG, I would like to extend outreach to scientists in psychology and neuroscience who could use neural networks as tools to better understand their research. Astechnology is moving forward, the amount of biological and psychological data is also increasing and models are critical tools to interpret the data. From an engineering perspective, modelers need data to test and validate their models, and psychologists and neuroscientists are the ones who can provide this data. While the engineering and computer scientists community is currently well–represented at IJCNN, increasing outreach to scientists in other fields can facilitate collaborations and create a synergistic research focus that can only result from direct collaborations with those in fields such as computational modeling and biophysical experimentalists. Also, women are well represented in psychology and neuroscience, so reaching out to these communities will increase membership diversity in INNS. Zeng-Guang Hou (CV)Neural networks are a fundamental pillar supporting AI and a driving force to its fast advancement. Students, young researchers and industrial practitioners are potential members of INNS. Also, biological and brain research have been contributing to the neural networks community. We need to have more people from fundamental research like neuroscientists and mathematicians join us. I have been a member of INNS for 19 years and have been serving this great community as a BOG member and an organizer of INNS’ conferences and activities. If elected, I would promote the INNS and increase its impact by organizing more activities and technical events, and by attracting more members, particularly students, the young, and also those from intelligence industries. I believe that INNS will be an active society bridging the gap between fundamental research and technological applications, and linking the interdisciplinary studies on artificial intelligence. Khan Iftekharuddin (CV)INNS has been in the forefront of theoretical and computational understanding of the brain and applying that knowledge to machine intelligence for over many decades. I believe that with ever increasing sensor data and expanding role of AI in solving the most complex global challenges in human health, climate, water and food security and energy among others, INNS and its membership are well equipped and poised to play a critical role. I have served INNS in various capacities by organizing IJCNN and WCCI conferences as Technical co-chair, Special Session co-chair, and Special Session and Workshop Organizer for many years. As a member of INNS BOG, I would work to make INNS the home of choice for the next generation of neural scientists and engineers who are inspired by brain sciences and brain inspired machines. I will focus on expanding membership in the regions with fewer representatives, creating new INNS chapters, working with different communities and developing programs with them that meet their needs, expanding our activities to make INNS more attractive to industry and new communities, expanding the portfolio of publications for more innovation and interdisciplinary related topics, develop new ways of communication such as virtual conferences, virtual expert roundtables and others. Thomas Trappenberg (CV)I have been a member of INNS since the mid 1990s and its annual meeting has become one of my favourite venues. I remember meeting Walter Freeman and John Taylor at INNS 1997 in Houston who encouraged me as a young researcher. Our conference is outstanding in bridging many areas. Clearly, there are now huge single-track conferences on Bayesian machine learning or deep learning, but which conference features fun progress in robotics with discussions on consciousness and a lecture by a psychiatrist that gets you thinking about the mind? We now need more than ever a broader view on the impact of AI on our society. On the board of governors, I would like to continue our tradition in bridging disciplines. I would like to be a mentor to a new generation of young researchers who do not forget the magic of science and the importance of seeing the big picture. Ultimately, I would like to bring IJCNN back to Canada, this time to the east coast which is as close to Europe as the west coast. Pavlo Tymoshchuk (CV)If elected, I will work closely with the Board of Governors to ensure all traditional INNS activities are successfully performed every year and the society continues to act as the premier organization related to multi- and cross-disciplinary learning and applications of neural networks.
